Satellite and Aerial System Installation Over Fibre Optics:

Fibre optic cabling is now becoming the communication medium of choice due to the ever more bandwidth hungry requirements of new solutions being developed.

This has led to fibre now being a cost-effective solution to providing broadcast signals to communal buildings such as Apartments, Hospitals, hotels, offices etc.

Fibre Integrated Satellite and Aerial Systems can distribute the signals from the communal satellite or aerial antennae to each home in a block of flats, providing all with access to:

  • Freesat and Sky digital satellite TV and radio.
  • Digital terrestrial TV for SOARVIEW reception, FMand DABradio

Allowing the elimination of quality and balancing problems inherent in copper based systems.

Aims of the course

To learn the techniques involved in Fibre Optic Communications distribution installations with particular relevance to TV distribution in communal buildings, apartments, hotels etc.

On completion of this course, learners will be able to carry out basic design, assembly and the test of basic Satellite/Aerial Fibre to the home type (FTTH) systems.

This course should satisfy reasonable requirements for those involved in the industry to expand their capabilities into fibre optic distribution to benefit from the signal quality and other installation benefits of fibre.

Content:

  • Description of Fibre Optic technology, Technical Parameters, such as the optical windows, fibre types for Datacomm’s and Telecommunications
  • Health and Safety when working with Fibre Optic Safe Working Practices BS7718 City & Guilds 3667
  • Types of cables and connectors used in the Fibre Optic Installation industry. Types, connectorisation and losses.
  • Applications of Fibre Optics with an understanding of the technology. Types, plugs, sockets, patching and coding of stranded cables.
  • Components contained within the systems. Abbreviations, acronyms. Main manufacturer examples are given and explained.
  • Typical Fibre Optic systems and calculations of signal losses and gains within them. = Loss budget workings. Attenuation The loss in power of electromagnetic signals between transmission and reception points.

Practical Activities:

  • Point to Point and split Systems build
  • Preparation for Fusion Splicing, (hot melt & epoxy Polish).
  • Fusion splicing and termination of Fibre Optic cables and connectors.
  • Installation and fault find on Fibre Optic Systems in the TV industry.

Learning style

A mix of theory, practical demonstrations and exercises throughout. With Visual, aids employed to enable all learners the opportunity to take in the subject effectively. Continual informal and formal assessments will monitor the learner’s progress throughout the day.
