CITY & GUILDS 3667 LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNICATIONS CABLING: "FIBRE SPLICING" |
The City and Guilds 3667 level 2 course is one of the most important courses to complete, by those wanting to get into a career focusing on fibre optic cabling, splicing and jointing or those wanting to focus on copper cabling such as cat5e and coax.
You may already be an engineer but have no formal qualification because you have completed on the job training. You may believe your years of experience qualify you. However more and more companies, councils, universities etc, are requiring companies, contractors, engineers and their employees to have this formal qualification, regardless whether you have completed manufacturers training.
This course at the moment is the industry standard and is the only course approved by the fibre optic industry association (FIA). It requires a specific amount of practical activity.

Online training and DVD training on its own cannot replace hands on practical, it has no industry approval and is valueless. However to enable a focus on practical activity when you attend at our training centre in Dublin, we are providing the required theory in a distance home learning format.
When you are with us you will train with qualified instructors that will train you in a real world environment not just in a class room. For example we provide the means for fibre splicing practical to be conducted in the back of a vehicle just like it is done in the real world.
Our centre has been put together so that you gain the maximum benefit from the course. We will train you to do the job, not just gain a piece of paper.
More engineers with fibre splicing and blowing skills are going to be required as the country starts to deploy Fibre to the home solutions. Digital Ireland and Britain need qualified engineers, BT and Eircom have already started to deploy their fibre to the cabinet solution (fttc) to offer customers higher bandwidths. Fibre to the Home Solutions are just around the corner in both countries.
Contents of the City and Guilds Communications Cabling Training Programme
The award is made up of units delivered in a standard format For the level2 award in communications cabling. The theory is studied by you at home.
Once you have completed all the review questions in the material, You then attend our training facility either in Dublin or Carlow for five days. Don't worry we take you through the theory again as part of the revision process before you take any of the course exams. ... The units are.
Core Unit.
101 Principles of Communication Cabling
This unit is mandatory and must be completed by every learner Any ONE of the following additional units must also be completed to achieve the level 2 Certificate in Communications Cabling.
The core unit is designed to give you the basic principles and covers aspects of health and safety, safe working practices, it also provides you with the key concepts of communication systems.
You will study topics like , health and safety, basic electronics, communication networks, network topologies wave forms, simplex, duplex communications, serial and parallel communications, Ethernet, analogue and digital communications, binary, SI units, & Ohms Law.
We tend to provide this material to be studied prior to attending the training facility. We confirm your understanding of the material with review exercises and before you take the city and guilds examinations we take you through a revision process.
Optional Units.
This award has three distinctive pathways and optional units. The Fibre optic splicing programme requires the completion of either one of the two following units to gain the award:
Unit 102 Fibre Optic Splicing in an internal environment (Splicing Lan Datacomm's network)
This unit should be taken by those who would be working with fibre optic cables inside buildings or between buildings for example connecting into communication racks.
This module is concerned with the installation, splicing, termination, connectorisation testing of fibre optic cables, typically a multi-mode fibre network within data communications in an internal environment using a variety of methods including, connectors, splice trays and cable.
Throughout this module you will train in our training centre, you will learn installation procedures, used within office buildings, data centres, industrial and commercial environments, install and terminate OM1, OM2, OM3 fibre optic cables, splicing, connectorisation using heat cure and cold cure, expoxy and polish, termination and testing of fibre optic cables in an internal environment, you will splice in rack enclosure patch panels, ODF wall mounted enclosures, and make patch cords.
You will be taught how to perform link testing using various test equipment, also learn how to use OTDR's, to diagnose and rectify faults, read OTDR graphs. Perform link certification, Use the latest new Bi-directional testers, etc.
Unit 103 Fibre Optic Cabling in an External Environment (Splicing Telecom's)
This unit should be taken by those that will be working on telecommunications networks using closures outisde in cabinets or underground. This unit is concerned with the installation, splicing, termination and testing of fibre optic cables, typically a single-mode fibre network in an external environment using external joints and cable within Telecommunications networks.
Networks such as CWDM/DWDM, Metro Ethernet, Motorways, SDH, CCTV,Mobile Backhaul, Windfarms, EPON, GPON, (FTTx, ) X= Fibre to the home, cabinet, building, desk.
At our training centre you will build a singlemode fibre optic network. Terminate enclosures and test the network. You will check for continuity using visible light, use various test methods such as ILM, OTDR, you will also learn how to troubleshoot networks and test to industry standards.
Though you only need to take one of these optional modules to gain the award. If you expect or are looking to complete this type of work on Lan's inside and on Telecommunication networks outside it is ESSENTIAL that you complete both units.
We do provide a training programme which combines both modules so that you can gain both the internal and external fibre splicing certificates. Just follow our links below to our individual training programmes.
